About Transcend Coffee
A bit about the crew at Transcend
If you have visited Transcend Coffee, you will know that we are absolutely committed to fresh roasted coffee. We know first hand that drinking fresh roasted coffee can be a truly amazing experience that goes well above and beyond a jolt of caffeine to get you through the day. Freshly roasted small batch whole bean coffee can open the doors to tastes and smells that can take you to new places. it’s almost a religious experience.
Transcend coffee was started in July 2006 by Poul Mark who had both a passion for coffee, but also a vision of creating a space where people could gather and enjoy great company when drinking amazing coffee. There is no doubt that Transcend Coffee is a destination, tucked away in the light industrial zone, but the trip is worth it. Poul continues to learn the craft of roasting, tasting, buying, and sourcing coffee, and considers himself a student of coffee, knowing that there is so much more to learn about coffee, each and every day.
Poul originally trained and practiced as a lawyer and did some consulting before starting Transcend. Now you can find him at the shop most days, cupping, chatting, drinking and generally enjoying life. Poul's current focus at Transcend is on growing the business, visiting the countries where coffee grows, judging coffee competitions and barista competitions.
"A bad day at the roastery is better than a great day at the law office"
Poul Mark loves to talk about coffee, and is always excited about the opportunity to help people grow in their awareness and understanding of the world of specialty coffee. If you would like Poul to come and speak to your community organization, or club, please contact him at the address below. Poul has spoken at Rotary Clubs, Lunch meetings, and even a Teacher's convention. Poul Mark also likes to write about coffee, and would be happy to contribute an article for your next addition or issue.

Andrew Legg was lurred away from the grey and dreary city of Vancouver by Poul to come work at Transcend when it first started. Now a happy resident of sunny Edmonton, Andrew is putting his 10 years plus experience to work behind the espresso bar as Transcend's Chief of Culture.
As the Chief of Culture, Andrew works with new staff at Transcend getting them up to speed, and is also now working at growing the wholesale business of Transcend. He is the resident comic (in fact an equity actor) who keeps the spirit, quality and culture of Transcend up to our high standards. He can usually be found behind the bar concocting some new drink and foisting it upon our regulars for their opinion. Andrew competed in the 2007 Canadian National Barista Championship and for his first kick at the cat did very well.
If you are interested in wholesale coffee inquiries, please contact Andrew below.

Chad Moss
We are proud to have Chad working at Transcend, who was rescued from the oil patch, and brought safely back to the world of specialty coffee. Chad is the lead roaster at Transcend, and our resident espresso specialist. He offers years of experience both in the hospitality business, but more importantly in the world of high-end specialty coffee. Trained in the ways of espresso in Australia, he won the title of Southern Australia Barista Champion a couple of times, and used to teach espresso at a culinary institute in Adelaide. More recently, Chad won the title of Canadian Prairie Regional Barista Champion, and finished 4th at the recent Canadian Barista Championship, held in Montreal.
We could go on and on about all of Chad's experiences and virtues, but suffice it to say that he is a welcome addition to the mix and will ensure that Transcend's standards are maintianed; we aren't sure of whether to call him our coffee enforcer, or coffee guerilla...

Josh is a passionate student of espresso and is constantly working to perfect his craft. Josh also works as a an apprentice roaster at Transcend and is already gearing up to compete in next year's National Barista Championship.

Transcend Part Time Barista Line-up

Transcend is very fortunate to have an amazing group of part-time staff, all of whom work very hard and are amazing baristas in their own right. To balance out the testosterone levels at Transcend we hired Anna Horgus. A teacher by trade, she has given herself to learning the art of espresso and can be found rocking the bar most days. Our next barista Jeff Johnson, musician extraordinaire, Law Student, and now barista has joined the team. We are also proud to say that Mel Leeson has joined the Transcend family too. While she is short in stature (we had to get her a stool for the Clover), she is a vibrant and enthusiastic coffee fan, who is looking to do big things in the coffee world. Geoff Linden also pulls shots at Transcend as he waits anxiously for his own cafe, to open sometime early next year. Stewart Transton (Disco Stew) recently joined the Transcend team and has been a great addition as he learns the facinating world of specialty coffee. And last but not least, we recently had the pleasure of welcoming Charlene Watkins to our team, fresh from a month's stint in Vancouver honing her skills as a barista under the fine tutalidge of the crew at Wicked Cafe.
